Akron General’s 4200 Unit is a Complex Cardiovascular Unit that cares for a diverse patient population with high acuity. Patients that are cared for include: post open-heart surgery patients at day 3 from the CVICU, vascular surgery patients (amputations, fem/pop surgeries), lung surgeries (VATS procedure) that require patients to have a chest tube inserted for several days, irregular heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation that requires titrated IV medication, post heart catheterization (PCI) patients that require frequent observation following the procedure, pacemaker implantations, heart attacks, congestive heart failure and pulmonary embolism/DVT with IV anticoagulation.
By joining the 4200 team as a Patient Care Nursing Assistant (PCNA),you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and feel comfortable,supportedand safe throughout treatment. This is a hands-on role that requires a present,attentiveand empathetic caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and support patients through some of their most vulnerable moments, as this is one of the highest acute areas in the hospital. In this role, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments within the Cleveland Clinic system.
A caregiver in this position worksdaysfrom 7:00AM – 3:30PM, including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Prepare units, patientroomsand patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies.
Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, back rubs, etc.
Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry,weightand height.
Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction and removing urinary foley catheters.
Prepare patients for meals,assistin feedingpatientifnecessaryand distribute water and other nourishments according to patient needs in compliance with physician orders.
Assistwith pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizingspecialequipmentand ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.
Assistandaccompanypatients during admission,transferand discharge.
Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patientneedsand respond to patient call lights promptly.
Collect, properlylabeland transport specimens toproperarea.
Assistin keeping patient rooms in order, reporting equipment that is out of order, cleaning equipment (as assigned) and mandatory inventory and distributing unit linen and supplies.
Document patient care in the electronic medical record.
Complete ongoing competency requirements, educationprogramsand mandatory training tomaintaincertification and/or licensure.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or within new hire period
Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)
One year of recent acute care experience OR military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W)or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1)
