Position Summary
The University Health Network Animal Resource Centre (UHN ARC) operates across six sites in the City of Toronto and supports one of the largest hospital-based research animal programs in Canada. The ARC facilitates translational research for over 200 investigators across five research institutes, with more than 900 approved animal use protocols. Facilities include integrated multi-modal imaging, behavioural testing suites, and surgical operating rooms, supporting work with a wide range of laboratory animal species.
This is a permanent, full-time position reporting to the Director, Veterinary Services, Animal Resource Centre.
Duties
- The Clinical Veterinarian provides comprehensive clinical and research support within a dynamic, multi-site program.
- Providing timely and responsive clinical, diagnostic, and veterinary care to a wide range of species
- Oversight of the preventative medicine and health surveillance program
- Supporting investigators in the development and use of appropriate animal models
- Assisting with pre-, intra-, and post-operative surgical procedures, including anesthesia and analgesia
- Developing study-specific humane endpoints in collaboration with Principal Investigators (PIs), Animal Care Committees (ACC), and ARC staff
- Updating and maintaining site- and study-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Working collaboratively with animal care, husbandry, and supervisory staff to evaluate and maintain high standards of animal care across dynamically changing colonies and research needs
- Contributing to the ARC Quality Assurance Program
- Supporting the development and delivery of ARC training programs for researchers and animal care staff
- Participating in ACC activities, including pre-submission veterinary protocol review, post-approval monitoring
- Providing consistent, evidence-based veterinary expertise to support ACC review and decision-making
- Providing expert guidance on veterinary care, husbandry, and model development to support high-quality research outcomes
- Ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory and institutional requirements
- Assisting the ARC Directors with administrative and operational functions as needed
