This Research Associate 3 position oversees all functions of the Core Laboratory GeneLab administered by the Division of Biotechnology & Molecular Medicine. The position manages all aspects of GeneLab including overseeing the associated cost center. The position oversees all functions and equipment within GeneLab, ensuring the appropriate maintenance of equipment and its use by faculty, staff and students. The position works in close collaboration with the BioMMED front office to ensure accurate posting of all expenses and invoicing GeneLab clients. The position performs nucleic acid sequencing reactions, including conventional Sanger sequencing as well as next generation sequencing. The position works with BioMMED staff for the deployment of new sequencing technologies that can be used for research and diagnostic purposes.
Job Responsibilities:
Perform nucleic acid sequencing reactions using multiple sequencers available in Genelab. Analyze, edit and interpret sequencing and nucleic acid fragment analysis data; Create and send reports electronically. Assist researchers in the operation of real-time PCR machines. Verify quality of DNA and RNA samples for various sequencing and PCR techniques, as needed.- 40%
Assist in the overall management all aspects of the Gene Probes and Expression Systems Laboratory Cost Center; Supervise Cost Center student workers; Provide monthly, and annual reports; Generate budgets, Generate cost development reports; Generate invoices and accounts reports using QuickBooks: Perform administrative duties for a web-based primer ordering system; Perform administrative duties for a web-based scheduler for real time PCR; Maintain vendor relations and databases; Laboratory upkeep; Order supplies; Maintain inventory; Contribute new information for the BioMMED website with current Genelab topics and molecular techniques; Coordinate special topics seminars and instrument demonstrations-25%
Give technical advice in the operation of all instruments of Genelab. Troubleshoot applications for all instruments and verify their optimum operation and maintenance. Instruct all researchers on the proper use of each instrument.- 15%
Work with BIoMMED faculty and staff for the deployment of new sequencing technologies that can be used for research and diagnostic purposes.- 15%
Assist in the execution of special research projects. Provide technical assistance with experiments involving testing in laboratory animals (mice, rats, etc). Provide assistance in maintaining laboratory records for specialized research projects, as needed.- 10%

Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in related field; OR Bachelor's degree in related field and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biology; and 3 years of specific experience with sequencing technologies, both Sanger conventional sequencing and next gen sequencing. Experience in biomedical research, experience with sequencing technologies and operation of molecular biology equipment and technologies
