KOHO is looking for a Director, Financial Risk to lead the strategy and analytics efforts within our financial risk management function. In this pivotal role, you will oversee both Credit Risk and Non-Credit Financial Risk (including Market and Liquidity Risk), managing a team of people managers and experts to safeguard KOHO’s financial health while enabling sustainable growth.
Working closely with Product, Finance, Technology, and Data teams, you will lead a team of financial risk subject matter experts in the development and implementation of analytical frameworks that drive our risk decisions and ensure regulatory compliance. In addition to being the financial risk SME in the development of risk and valuation models, you will have end-to-end ownership for risk appetite metrics and loss forecasting, IFRS 9 provisioning, and portfolio monitoring. You will also provide "effective challenge" and decision governance across the organization.
Manage and mentor a high-performing team of people managers and individual contributors across all Financial Risk domains.
Foster a culture of rigorous analysis, ownership, and continuous improvement.
Decision Governance: Establish and maintain robust decision governance frameworks for key business decisions with Financial Risk impact, ensuring that they align with KOHO’s risk appetite.
Effective Challenge: Provide "effective challenge" on decisions impacting financial risk, such as model development and performance monitoring activities by Tech/Data Science, financial risk-related inputs to stress testing provided by first-line teams, or new product or marketing initiatives proposed by Product.
Risk Appetite: Oversee and recommend the frameworks for assessing and measuring our financial risk appetite, lead the financial risk appetite approval process by senior leadership and the board, and lead the development and monitoring of the risk appetite metrics.
Policy: Lead governance for financial risk policies including credit policy, across product portfolios, monitor for behavior trends and shifts, and use monitoring results to recommend and implement immediate changes, such as tightening credit limits.
Model Risk Management: Leads second line oversight of models used in decisions impacting financial risk.
Forecasting & Provisioning: Oversee short- and long-term delinquency and loss forecasting. Lead the calculation of Expected Credit Loss (ECL), stress testing, and provisioning in strict accordance with IFRS 9 standards.
Market & Liquidity Risk: Collaborate with Finance and Treasury teams in the development and execution of forecasting frameworks for market and liquidity risk. Establish monitoring and reporting for Financial Risks.
Stress Testing: Lead the stress testing process for financial risk, including the methodology and scenario selection process. Provide effective challenge to first line teams that create the financial risk-related inputs to stress testing, including to Finance teams on liquidity and market risk-related methodologies and forecasts..
Portfolio Monitoring: Drive portfolio risk monitoring, reporting, and insight generation to identify trends, risks, and opportunities early. Identify and drive opportunities for automated anomaly detection leveraging state-of-the-art tools and techniques.
Data Stewardship: Act as the primary steward for Financial Risk data. This includes identification and/or definition of new data sources/elements for risk-related decision making; identification/documentation of critical data elements; working with the Data and Technology teams in the documentation of all associated metadata (including data lineage); and ensuring data quality, integrity, and availability for decision-making.
Partner closely with Finance on capital planning, provisioning, and forecasting. Collaborate with Finance in the design, execution, and oversight of comprehensive stress testing programs for financial risks to ensure KOHO’s readiness in the face of adverse events.
Collaborate with Product Management to embed risk insights into new product development and feature optimization.
Collaborate with Marketing to assess the risk impact of marketing initiatives.
Work with Technology, Data Analytics, and Data Science to enhance risk infrastructure, data pipelines, models, and modeling capabilities.
10+ years of experience in financial risk management, with significant exposure to retail credit risk and/or treasury/financial risk management.
Leadership: Proven experience managing people managers and leading high-performing analytical teams.
Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance, Engineering) or equivalent practical experience.
Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of IFRS 9 standards, ECL methodologies, and stress testing frameworks. Familiarity with market and liquidity risk principles.
Analytical Mindset: Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable strategic insights.
Communication: Strong ability to communicate complex risk concepts to non-technical stakeholders and senior executive leadership.
Collaboration: A "builder" mindset—you thrive in cross-functional environments and can effectively influence peers in Product, Finance, and Tech.
The budgeted salary range for this role is $180,000-$240,000CAD / year.
