The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system鈥檚 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 wastewater treatment plants, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories and harbor vessels.
Under general supervision and with wide latitude for independent judgment, the Trainer (Associate Public Health Sanitarian 03) will design, deliver, and evaluate Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) training programs for DEP staff. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, environmental regulations, and DEP policies while fostering a culture of safety and professional development.
- Deliver Training Programs: Conduct in person classes on Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, PPE, First Aid/CPR/AED, Lab Safety, Waste Management, Fall Protection, Cranes & Rigging Safety, Wastewater Treatment Methods, and other EHS topics.
- Train New Hires: Lead orientation and safety training for new employees, such as Sewage Treatment Workers, ensuring they understand DEP protocols and operational procedures.
- Develop Curricula: Research regulations, design new training modules, and update existing presentations to meet DEP and OSHA standards.
- Maintain Records: Enter training data into agency databases, generate reports for management, and track employee certifications.
- Evaluate Effectiveness: Review vendor training programs, attend workshops, and provide feedback to improve DEP鈥檚 training approach.
- Support Safety Compliance: Recommend protective equipment, review health & safety plans, and ensure staff follow DEP and OSHA requirements.
- Collaborate Across Units: Participate in bureau meetings, communicate training needs with supervisors, and provide technical guidance to staff.
