AECOM is seeking a motivated Mid-Level ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Engineer to join our growing Transportation practice in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is an exciting opportunity to help design and deliver innovative transportation technology solutions that improve roadway safety, mobility, and system performance across Indiana and the broader region. You will contribute to projects that connect infrastructure, communications, and intelligent technologies to support safer, more efficient, and more reliable transportation networks.
In this role, you will support the planning, design, integration, and implementation of ITS infrastructure, including traffic management systems, fiber-optic communications networks, closed-circuit television (CCTV), dynamic message signs, traffic monitoring devices, and connected vehicle technologies. You will apply engineering principles and systems engineering processes to develop practical, integrated solutions from initial concepts through final design and implementation. You will also have opportunities to contribute to traffic engineering, coordinate with clients and partner disciplines, and help guide junior staff.
This position offers a strong pathway toward Deputy Project Management, with opportunities to expand your project delivery, client coordination, technical leadership, and business development experience. Join a collaborative team working at the intersection of transportation engineering and emerging technology, where your work can help shape the future of intelligent and connected transportation systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the planning, design, and implementation of ITS infrastructure and emerging transportation technologies, including traffic management systems, fiber-optic communications, CCTV, dynamic message signs, vehicle detection, and connected vehicle applications.
- Develop ITS design plans, specifications, engineer’s estimates, technical memoranda, reports, and other project deliverables in accordance with applicable agency requirements and engineering standards.
- Perform ITS design activities, including field device layout, communications network design, equipment integration, and coordination of hardware and software interfaces.
- Apply systems engineering principles to develop concepts of operations, system requirements, system architecture, interface documentation, and implementation strategies.
- Support traffic engineering assignments, including traffic operations analysis, safety evaluations, traffic signal-related studies, and maintenance of traffic or traffic control plan development.
- Evaluate existing transportation infrastructure and ITS deployments to identify opportunities for improved system performance, reliability, operational efficiency, and safety.
- Coordinate with civil, electrical, traffic, systems, and software engineering professionals to deliver integrated transportation solutions.
- Participate in client meetings, project coordination activities, and technical discussions with transportation agencies, municipalities, utility providers, and subconsultants.
- Assist with field reviews, existing-condition assessments, equipment inventories, and coordination of ITS installations and system upgrades, as appropriate.
- Review technical deliverables prepared by junior staff, provide constructive guidance, and contribute to quality assurance and quality control processes.
- Manage assigned technical tasks to meet established budgets, schedules, project scopes, and AECOM quality standards, with increasing responsibility for project coordination and delivery.
- Support project managers and technical leaders with scope development, task planning, schedule tracking, risk identification, and coordination of project resources.
- Contribute to business development activities, including proposal preparation, technical approaches, project pursuits, and identification of opportunities to expand AECOM’s ITS and transportation technology services.
