AECOM is seeking a highly motivated Digital Infrastructure / Telecommunications Engineering Intern to support our growing Technology Solutions and Digital Infrastructure practice.
This internship is designed for a student pursuing a degree in Construction Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline who is interested in developing a career supporting telecommunications and digital infrastructure projects.
The intern will work alongside experienced engineers, designers, project managers, and technical specialists supporting the planning, design, coordination, and delivery of telecommunications infrastructure. The position will provide hands-on exposure to fiber optic networks, outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) telecommunications systems, underground infrastructure, data center connectivity, and large-scale infrastructure programs.
The successful candidate will have an opportunity to build practical engineering and project delivery skills by working directly with project drawings, specifications, quantity takeoffs, design documentation, and multidisciplinary project teams.
The responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist with the planning and design of fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure.
- Support development and review of OSP and ISP telecommunications designs.
- Assist with underground conduit, duct bank, handhole, manhole, vault, and fiber route layouts.
- Review engineering drawings, construction documents, specifications, and other technical information.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and assist with development of project estimates.
- Assist with evaluation of proposed fiber routes and telecommunications pathways.
- Help identify potential utility conflicts, constructability concerns, and coordination issues.
- Support preparation and quality review of drawings, calculations, reports, and other project deliverables.
- Assist project managers and technical leads with document organization, project tracking, and technical coordination.
- Participate in multidisciplinary coordination with civil, electrical, structural, GIS, BIM, and other engineering disciplines.
- Gain exposure to CAD, GIS, BIM, and other digital design and project delivery tools used on infrastructure projects.
- Assist with research and application of telecommunications design criteria, client standards, and project requirements.
- Participate in internal design reviews and quality-control activities.
- Support project teams on data center, fiber network, utility, transportation, and other digital infrastructure assignments.
- Perform additional technical and project support activities as assigned while developing increasing responsibility throughout the internship.
This internship is intended to provide progressive, hands-on experience rather than observation alone. The intern will have the opportunity to develop skills in:
- Fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure
- OSP and ISP design
- Underground conduit and utility infrastructure
- Engineering drawing and specification review
- Quantity takeoffs and estimating
- Constructability and design review
- CAD, GIS, BIM, and digital delivery workflows
- Quality assurance and quality control
- Multidisciplinary engineering coordination
- Project management and project delivery
