Position Purpose:
The Utility Worker is responsible for performing a variety of routine cleaning, maintenance and repair to tanks, drains, culverts, grounds, buildings, and associated structures.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Maintains, repairs, and operates the underground pipes, manholes, and lift stations that safely carry wastewater to treatment facilities.
- Maintains treatment plant and lift station areas to include mowing and weed eating.
- Line Cleaning: Flushes and clears sewer mains using high-pressure water jet trucks and mechanical rodders to prevent blockages and sanitary sewer overflows.
- Removes roots, grease, grit, and other obstructions from gravity and force mains.
- Structure Upkeep: Inspects, repairs, and builds manholes, cleanouts, and catch basins.
- Excavates damaged areas to repair or replace broken sewer mains, laterals, and pipe joints.
- Maintains and assists with the repair of sewage lift stations, pumps, and related electrical or mechanical components.
- Logs daily work tasks, updates computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and reads system maps.
- Follows strict safety rules and completes permits when entering manholes and underground vaults.
- Responds to after-hours callouts, sewer backups, and system failures, sometimes assisting with traffic control at work sites.
