The Intermediate Highway Design Engineer – OpenRoads role is based in Markham, Ontario, Canada and supports the delivery of transportation infrastructure projects within a multidisciplinary engineering team. The position contributes to provincial and municipal roadway design, including highways, interchanges, and urban roadways, under the guidance of senior engineering leadership.
The role encompasses geometric design development, preparation of technical documentation, and coordination with disciplines such as structures, traffic engineering, utilities, and environmental services. Work involves adherence to Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards, Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guidelines, and municipal regulations across project lifecycle phases from preliminary design through detailed design and construction support.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop geometric design solutions for highways, interchanges, arterial roads, and collector road systems in accordance with design standards
- Prepare alignments, profiles, cross-sections, and grading layouts, ensuring integration with drainage design coordination
- Produce and review engineering drawings, technical reports, and quantity take-offs for transportation infrastructure projects
- Support preparation of contract documents, specifications, and cost estimates aligned with project scope and procurement requirements
- Ensure compliance with MTO standards, TAC guidelines, and municipal engineering requirements through design review processes
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including structural, traffic, utility, and environmental disciplines to resolve design interfaces
- Participate in design reviews, client coordination meetings, and technical discussions to support project delivery
- Provide construction support services including responding to RFIs and reviewing field conditions against design intent
