We have an opening for the RadiationSafetyPrograms&ServicesTechnicalLeader/Alternate RadiationProtectionFunctionalAreaManager(RP FAM) to provide highly advanced technical expertise and leadership to all aspects of LLNL’s Radiation Safety Program and associated analytical laboratories and services. This position is in the Radiation Protection Functional Area (RPFA) within the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate.
This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the o-ice and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.
You will
- Partner with the Radiation Protection Functional Area Manager/Radiological Control Manager (RP FAM/RCM) on day-to-day management and leadership of the organizations, disciplines, and personnel within the RPFA. Function as the RP FAM/RCM in their absence.
- Function as the Subject Matter Expert for 10 CFR 835, Occupational Radiation Protection and applicable Department of Energy (DOE) directives. Developing highly advanced technical/operational solutions to effectively implement contractual obligations.
- Supervise health physicists in the Radiation Safety Programs Group, providing technical expertise with the Environmental Functional Area and the Analytical Services & Instrumentation Group while ensuring contractual commitments and obligations are adequately and consistently flowed down through the group’s development of procedures and processes.
- Provide technical direction and/or consultation with staff conducting radiation protection training programs.
- Provide highly advanced technical expertise and leadership on all aspects of LLNL’s Radiation Safety Program to the ES&H health physics staff, developing innovative solutions to complex problems ensuring both institutional consistency and programmatic flexibility. Responsible for high-level goal setting, strategic planning, and directing and accomplishing program goals and objectives.
- Develop and promulgate bridging documents between RPFA and the Environmental Functional Area and Analytical Services & Instrumentation Group. Ensure RPFA contractual commitments and obligations related to personnel, area, and environmental monitoring are addressed in the bridging documents.
- Lead Radiation Protection Safety Program staff and contractors in the maintenance and development the Radiation Protection Manual for LLNL, associated implementing procedures, and related institutional procedures such as the accelerator safety program.
- Direct the Radiation Protection Safety Program staff, external assessors, and Field Office Participants in the conduct of Triennial Assessment activities and serve as Assessment Team Leader, targeted Focused Reviews of various RP Program Elements, and have primary responsibility for assessment report preparation in collaboration with Assurance Management and the Radiation Protection Functional Area Manager.
- Guide Environmental Safety and Health HPs through initial implementation of a Radiation Protection Performance Trending and Metrics program to demonstrate the strategy for performance improvement feedback in Radiation Protection.
- Take part in causal analysis efforts for programmatic issues and events, and provide input to requirements specification for radiation protection application development and serve in stakeholder roles for multidiscipline applications affecting radiation protection.
- Serve as a technical resource to LLNL management, including providing emergency response support at the Emergency Operations Center and working with Public Affairs to address radiological issues that arise.
- Lead or participate in interdisciplinary teams to effect solutions to highly complex problems impacting multiple disciplines and work with DOE staff and a network of colleagues from other program sites to anticipate and ensure regulatory issues are effectively addressed.
