Mowery & Schoenfeld is seeking an ambitious and curious state & local tax manager with particular interest and expertise in advising clients about sales & use tax implications related to their businesses, recognizing and evaluating potential tax risks in mergers & acquisitions, and keeping up with changes in sales & use tax statutes, policies, and regulations.
Job duties
Serve as a technical tax resource for state and local taxes on M&A transactions, including tax structuring and tax due diligence services.
Recognizes complex sales and use tax situations, outlining the relevant issues and indicating the appropriate sources for further investigation.
Identifies when research is needed; frames issues to be researched; identifies sources of all information including information tending to contradict preferred positions, analyzes facts and authorities, and reports the analysis.
Analyzes researched facts and the sources utilized prior to composing a detailed report or preparing a taxability matrix of the research findings.
Conduct review of client operations to determine states where and when sales & use tax returns should be filed.
Review client records to determine if proper resale and exemption certificates are maintained and develop procedures for retaining proper resale and exemption certificates.
Prepare applications for voluntary disclosure and sales tax permits.
Assist clients and internal departments with responses to indirect tax notices.
Occasionally prepares and conducts detailed reviews of sales & use tax returns with the ability to identify significant sales & use tax issues.
Represents clients before any tax authority on contested sales & use tax issues.
Utilizes sales & use tax research databases and other sales & use tax-related software in the completion of assigned tasks.
