The firm is seeking a Senior Accountant to support the delivery of high-quality, review-ready financial statements and tax filings in compliance with NZ financial reporting standards and CA ANZ expectations. This role involves preparing multi-entity financial reports, managing tax compliance obligations, and maintaining accurate, well-documented workpapers using cloud-based accounting systems such as Xero. The successful candidate will work independently while collaborating with Directors and internal teams to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and consistent quality across all deliverables.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Financial Reporting & Methodology
- Prepare annual financial statements for companies, trusts, partnerships, and sole traders.
- Balance Sheet Focus: Follow a strict methodology of preparing a supporting workpaper for every asset and liability item before proceeding to the P&L.
- Analytical Review: Perform variance analysis on Profit & Loss accounts, comparing current year data against the prior year to identify and explain significant discrepancies (e.g., travel or repair spikes).
- Technical Vetting: Distinguish accurately between repairs/maintenance and fixed assets by reviewing source invoices and applying professional judgment.
2. Tax Compliance
- Prepare and file income tax returns across multiple entity structures.
- Manage GST and FBT returns, ensuring all reconciliations are tallied and validated.
- Calculate provisional and terminal tax obligations.
- NZ/AU Tax Alignment: While Australian experience is interchangeable, the candidate must be willing to master New Zealand-specific tax laws, including "Bright Line" property rules.
3. Reporting Frameworks & Compliance
- Apply knowledge of CA ANZ reporting requirements.
- Navigate various compliance frameworks including Special Purpose Financial Reporting (SPFR) and Tier 2–4 Charities reporting.
- Handle complex multi-entity portfolios and consolidation groups.
4. Systems & Technology
- Xero Expert: Advanced use of Xero, including the ability to perform layout changes and integrate third-party packages (e.g., payroll tools, Sift).
- FYI Docs: Utilize FYI Docs for document management, job allocation, and maintaining clear audit trails from Outlook to the firm's permanent files.
Requirements
Essential
- CA ANZ qualified (or equivalent CPA).
- Minimum 5+ years in a public practice/accounting advisory environment.
- Strong Technical Methodology: Proven ability to build "review-ready" workpapers that require minimal Director revisions.
- Interchangeable Tax Knowledge: Deep experience in Australian tax is acceptable if the candidate can demonstrate a quick learning curve for NZ legislation.
Desirable
- Direct experience with New Zealand Charities Services (Tiers 2–4).
- Experience with Consolidation Groups and Estates.
- Familiarity with Sift reporting tools.
Key Competencies
- Communication: Ability to translate "accounting language" into clear, professional English for non-accountant clients.
- Deadline Management: Proactive communication regarding capacity; ability to prioritize urgent tasks without sacrificing accuracy.
- Autonomy: A self-starter who maintains high-quality standards in a work-from-home setup through rigorous self-review.
