Introduction
As a Polymers and Composites Technician, you will become part of the Polymer Laboratory within the Superconducting Magnet Technology (SMT) Section, contributing directly to the development of cutting-edge systems and components at the heart of CERN accelerator complex. In this hands-on role, you will be involved in the manufacturing of superconducting coils and other critical components, applying advanced composite techniques such as vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), bonding, and prepreg processing. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development and optimisation of innovative materials and fabrication methods, pushing the boundaries of performance and reliability.
Functions
- Contribute to the operation of the Polymer Laboratory by manufacturing key components for the CERN accelerator complex and experiments, and supporting on-site interventions for troubleshooting and repair of complex systems.
- Participate in the construction of superconducting magnets, including the operation and maintenance of polymer processing equipment such as vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) systems.
- Support the development, characterisation, and testing of polymer materials and composite solutions for a wide range of applications, including the fabrication of mock-ups and prototypes.
- Prepare and maintain manufacturing procedures and work instructions to ensure high standards of quality and traceability in production processes.
- Handle the procurement of materials and tooling for the Polymer Laboratory, and maintain the chemical inventory in compliance with safety and quality requirements.
