The Mechanical and Materials Engineering (EN-MME) group, within the Engineering Department (EN), is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the mechanical design, mechanical and thermo-mechanical simulation, and optimisation of CO2 cooling transfer lines as part of the CMS detector upgrade at CERN.
Your responsibilities
- Perform mechanical and thermo-mechanical analyses via finite element tools such as ANSYS, together with structural and thermal calculations in compliance with related standards.
- Prepare comprehensive technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Participate in iterative design development to meet both performance objectives and integration constraints.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and technicians across multiple domains, contributing to fabrication-related decisions and supporting quality assurance activities.

Your profile
- Previous experience with finite element analysis software for thermal and structural simulations (e.g. ANSYS).
- Familiarity with 3D CAD software (preferably CATIA).
- Familiarity with EN 13480 and other international design and safety standards for pressure vessels and mechanical components would be an advantage.
Skills
- Ability to analyse and interpret mechanical and thermo-mechanical simulation data to guide design decisions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and in teams.
- Attitude to teamwork in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
Eligibility criteria:
- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
- Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
- Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.
