Job Description Summary
Boiler & Refrigeration (B&R) Operator B – D Shift (Nights)
Job Description
(Boiler, Refrigeration, and Compressed Air Systems)
Position Summary
The Level B Boiler & Refrigeration Mechanic is an experienced utilities technician responsible for independently operating, monitoring, and performing intermediate maintenance and troubleshooting on industrial boiler or ammonia refrigeration systems.
This level demonstrates strong technical competence, the ability to resolve most routine system issues, and the ability to mentor lower-level operators.
A B&R Operator B may be assigned to Boiler Operations or Refrigeration Operations, with increasing expectations of cross-training. Operators at this level support system reliability, assist in equipment repairs requiring moderate technical skill, and ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, RMP, and PSM standards.
Core Responsibilities – B&R Operator B
Perform daily checks, rounds, and documentation independently with minimal oversight.
Conduct intermediate Preventive Maintenance (PM) tasks and corrective work within scope.
Troubleshoot abnormal system conditions and resolve common failures.
Assist with and sometimes lead LOTO, confined space prep, and safe work coordination.
Ensure regulatory documentation accuracy for OSHA, EPA, RMP, and PSM compliance.
Work alongside higher-level mechanics during major repairs, shutdowns, and startups.
Identify system performance issues and recommend corrective actions.
Use P&IDs, system drawings, and control systems to diagnose issues.
Provide mentorship and task support to Apprentice and Level C operators.
Assist with minor system optimization efforts to improve efficiency and reliability.
B&R Mechanic – Level B
Primary Duties
Boiler Systems
Independently operate and monitor high-pressure steam boilers and support systems.
Perform intermediate-level maintenance on:
Feedwater and condensate pumps
Boiler controls and basic combustion components
Steam traps, regulators, and distribution hardware
Softener systems and chemical feed systems
Perform boiler startup/shutdown procedures with minimal supervision.
Conduct water chemistry testing; adjust chemical feed systems for proper balance.
Identify combustion issues (excess air, flame stability, burner faults) and assist in corrective adjustments.
Inspect safety shutoff valves, low-water cutouts, flame scanners, and interlocks; escalate findings for repair.
Assist in repairs to steam distribution systems, including replacing:
Valves
Gaskets
Sight glasses
Pressure gauges and sensors
Perform preliminary diagnostics for:
Low steam pressure
Water carryover
Feedwater imbalance
Condensate return failures
Compressed Air System Duties – Level B
Perform intermediate diagnostics on compressors, dryers, and filters.
Replace and service prefilters, coalescing filters, and particulate filters.
Perform leak detection walks and document loss points.
Troubleshoot:
High dewpoint alarms
Excessive condensate
Dryer malfunction
Pressure drops
Support air receiver inspections and safety valve checks.
Competencies (Required at Level B)
Strong understanding of boiler operation and safety systems.
Knowledge of intermediate combustion principles and boiler control logic.
Ability to perform PMs and most repairs independently.
Ability to diagnose operational deviations and recommend corrective actions.
Comfortable assisting with combustion tuning and instrument checks.
Refrigeration Mechanic (Ammonia) – Level B
Primary Duties
Operate and troubleshoot industrial Ammonia Refrigeration systems with limited supervision.
Perform intermediate inspections and diagnostics including:
Compressor vibration/noise evaluation
Oil failure conditions
Suction/discharge imbalance
High-pressure/low-pressure alarms
Perform maintenance tasks on:
Evaporators (coil cleaning, TXV checks, fan repairs)
Condensers (spray system, pump maintenance, fan alignment)
Valves, strainers, and oil pots
Purge units and non-condensable removal systems
Assist in:
Pump outs
Valve rebuilds
Defrost troubleshooting
Minor compressor service tasks
Perform system oil management activities including:
Oil draining
Oil pot operation
Handling/transfer with compliant containment
Respond to ammonia alarms within training level; secure area and support emergency actions.
Troubleshoot minor refrigeration issues and recommend corrective steps.
Identify system inefficiencies and support optimization (superheat issues, condenser fouling, fan sequencing).
RTO – Level B Duties- Operate and Maintain
Perform intermediate RTO diagnostics including:
Temperature imbalance
Bed switching faults
Fan/VFD issues
Assist with burner adjustments and airflow checks.
Perform PMs on:
Media beds
Dampers and actuators
Burner assemblies
Support troubleshooting of common faults (valve sequencing, chamber temps).
Assist with testing environmental compliance indicators.
Competencies (Required at Level B)
Full understanding of the refrigeration cycle, system flow, and component interactions.
Ability to perform intermediate PMs and repairs independently.
Competence in ammonia safety, hazards, alarms, and emergency response protocols.
Ability to interpret pressure/temperature relationships and analyze system conditions.
Understanding of defrost concepts, low-side/high-side dynamics, and oil management.
Behavioral Competencies – Level B
Safety champion—actively identifies hazards and prevents unsafe behaviors.
Reliable and takes ownership of assigned systems.
