About ALSO.
We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride ALSO—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.
ALSO is looking for a Battery Controls Engineer to play a pivotal role in developing battery management system algorithms for our vehicles.
What You Will Do
Design and develop control algorithms for battery management systems (BMS), including thermal management, charging, and power distribution.
Develop and validate physics or data based battery state estimation algorithms (SOC, SOH, SOF).
Design and implement control and protection strategies (OV/UV, OC, cell balancing, thermal limits).
Build and validate system models in MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow for control development and verification.
Generate production-quality embedded code for deployment on microcontrollers.
Support model-based development workflows, including MIL, SIL, and HIL testing and validation.
Integrate BMS control algorithms into system architecture, ensuring compliance with safety and certification requirements.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Systems, EE, Battery Cell Engineering, Firmware) to deliver robust and timely solutions.
Analyze field data to refine predictive models for battery degradation and performance over time.
What You Will Bring
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Solid understanding of battery systems, including SOC/SOH estimation and cell balancing techniques.
Working knowledge of current types of Lithium Ion chemistries, typical chemical, electrochemical degradation mechanisms
Understanding of battery sensing, high-voltage systems, and BMS architecture.
Knowledge of control theory and state estimation methods (e.g., Kalman filtering).
Familiarity with BMS functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262).
Strong experience with MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow and model-based development.
Familiarity with C/C++ for embedded systems.
Experience with embedded code generation (Simulink Coder / Embedded Coder).
Experience with Vector tools (CANalyzer, CANape, CANoe).
The salary for this position ranges from $220,000 to $260,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
