Senior – HV Overhead Transmission Lines
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer – High Voltage Transmission to join our growing Transmission & Distribution team, supporting major transmission infrastructure and energy transition projects.
In this role, you will contribute to the design and delivery of overhead transmission line systems, typically ranging from 110kV to 400kV+, supporting projects from feasibility and concept development through detailed design and construction support.
You will work as part of multidisciplinary teams delivering grid reinforcement and renewable integration projects for Transmission System Operators, utilities, and infrastructure developers.
Key Responsibilities
1. Transmission Line Design
Design and engineer HV/EHV overhead transmission lines (typically 110kV–400kV+).
Develop and review deliverables including route alignments, tower spotting, conductor and earth wire selection, and insulator configurations.
Define clearances, right-of-way requirements, and design criteria in accordance with applicable standards.
Provide technical input to tower loading calculations and structural design teams.
Develop and review PLS-CADD models and transmission line layouts.
2. Transmission Line Calculations and Technical Studies
Perform key electrical and mechanical transmission line calculations, including:
Electrical studies
Conductor ampacity
Corona and radio interference
Electric field analysis
Line impedance and shielding performance
Mechanical studies
Sag–tension calculations
Conductor blowout
Loading cases (wind, ice, temperature)
Clearance verification
Structural interface
Tower loading trees and load combinations
Coordination with structural teams for tower and foundation design.
Engineering analysis is typically performed using PLS-CADD and PLS-TOWER (or equivalent tools).
3. Project Engineering and Multidisciplinary Coordination
Contribute to engineering delivery of overhead line projects across multiple project phases.
Coordinate with structural, geotechnical, power systems, and environmental teams.
Support feasibility studies, route corridor assessments, and technical evaluations.
Provide technical input to engineering deliverables, proposals, and project documentation.
4. Standards, Compliance and Quality
Ensure designs comply with relevant standards including IEC, IEEE, EN/British Standards and National Grid / DNO specifications.
Participate in design reviews, technical verification, and internal QA processes.
5. Construction and Site Support
Provide technical support during construction and installation, including:
Tower erection and foundation works
Conductor stringing operations
Resolution of site technical issues and design adjustments
6. Technical Documentation
Prepare and review engineering documentation including:
Transmission line design reports and calculation notes
Tower spotting reports and sag–tension charts
Technical specifications, BoQs, and construction drawings
Documentation supports design reviews, client approvals, and project audits.
