Karman Industries
Long Beach, CA
Founded in 2024 and headquartered in Signal Hill, California, Karman Industries is at the forefront of revolutionizing industrial thermal energy. Our mission is to electrify global thermal systems across data centers, manufacturing, and energy industries. Karman is developing the revolutionary Heat Processing Unit (HPU) to reinvent thermal handling for giga-scale data centers & AI factories. The HPU is built around a supercritical CO2 chiller system utilizing a high-speed electrically driven turbomachinery core. Our system aims to reduce energy consumption in data center thermal management by greater than 25% and increase energy density by 10x.
At Karman Industries, we are committed to fostering a dynamic and inclusive work environment where innovation thrives. Our team is composed of passionate professionals dedicated to making a tangible impact on the future of industrial manufacturing. Join us in our mission to transform the industry and contribute to a more sustainable world.
Staff Mechanical Engineer, Turbomachinery
Karman Industries is seeking an experienced Staff Mechanical Engineer, Turbomachinery to lead the design, development, and integration of rotating machinery for the next generation of heat processing systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for endâtoâend ownership of turbomachinery components and systemsâincluding compressors, turbines/expander stages, seals, bearings, and highâspeed rotating assembliesâused within the Heat Processing Unit (HPU) platform and future product lines.
This role requires deep technical expertise in turbomachinery aerodynamics, rotor dynamics, thermalâmechanical analysis, and highâspeed system integration. You will drive the full lifecycle from conceptual design and firstâprinciples modeling through prototype build, testing, and productionization. We value firstâprinciples thinking, handsâon problem solving, accountability, and close collaboration with crossâfunctional partners to deliver cohesive, highâperformance systems.
Responsibilities:
Lead architecture, design, and analysis of highâspeed turbomachinery components including compressors, turbine/expander stages, volutes/diffusers, seals, and bearing systems.
Develop aerodynamic and thermodynamic models to predict performance, efficiency, operability, and offâdesign behavior of rotating components.
Perform rotor dynamic and structural analyses to ensure highâspeed system stability, durability, and reliability.
Own turbomachinery integration into the overall heat processing system, ensuring alignment with thermal, mechanical, and manufacturing requirements.
Create and manage complex CAD assemblies, detailed component models, and engineering drawings for prototypes and production hardware.
Lead and support test campaigns, including instrumentation planning, test stand definition, data analysis, and performance correlation.
Guide suppliers and internal manufacturing teams in the fabrication, balancing, and assembly of highâspeed rotating hardware.
Ensure designs meet performance targets, cost objectives, reliability standards, and program schedules.
Apply creativity and firstâprinciples reasoning to develop novel solutions that challenge conventional turbomachinery designs.
Contribute to roadmap development for nextâgeneration compressors and expanders tailored for industrial heat electrification applications.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelorâs degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
5+ years of experiencein end-to-end turbomachinery design, analysis, and testing (compressors, turbines, expanders, or highâspeed rotating systems).
Strong proficiency with CAD tools (Siemens NX or equivalent).
Knowledge of aerodynamic design principles, rotor dynamics, and turbomachinery thermodynamics.
Demonstrated handsâon experience building, assembling, or testing rotating hardware.
Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, tolerancing, and highâspeed system considerations.
Highly selfâmotivated, detailâoriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities with excellent communication skills.
Desired Skills and Experience:
Masterâs degree or higher in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
8+ years of relevant experience
Direct experience with turbomachinery CFD, 1D cycle modeling, and performance simulation tools.
Proficiency with FEA tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, NASTRAN, or similar.
Knowledge of highâtemperature, highâpressure fluid systems, steam cycles, or thermodynamic cycle optimization.
Experience taking turbomachinery concepts from initial design through production and field operation.
Familiarity with manufacturing environments, including machining, rotor assembly, balancing, and quality control.
Experience with highâspeed electric motors, magnetic bearings, or permanentâmagnet machine integration.
Programming experience in Python or similar languages for analysis, automation, or simulation workflows.
Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity. In addition to base salary, for full-time hires, you may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of stock options, and access to medical, vision & dental coverage as well as access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
