Our Clinical Resource Unit (CRU) patient safety companions float throughout the hospital inpatient units to help us provide the best and safest care.
Prefer nursing students who don't graduate before December 2027.
Requires minimum of one shift per week and we have:
second shift 3p-11:30p
third shift 11p-7:30a
Must be able to commit to the schedule requirement while in school and to work year round. We do not hire just for the summer.
Job Summary
Under the direction of a nurse, this role provides supervision for assigned patients. The main responsibility is to help keep patients safe by watching them closely and using simple safety actions. Basic tasks are performed as listed within the Patient Safety Companion Competency checklist.
Essential Functions
- Maintains patient safety through continual surveillance and simple interventions for patients at safety risk related to psychological, developmental or behavioral needs. Examples of patients who may require a sitter include: patients on suicide precautions, with developmental delays, recovering from head injuries post-trauma, or patients at-risk for interruption of medical therapies/treatment due to behavioral/cognitive concerns. Simple interventions may include distraction, therapeutic play, prevention of pulling at tubes/dressings, re-direction and re-orientation.
- Promptly communicates observations, concerns, and needs of the patient to the registered nurse.
- Performs delegated activities per the direction of a registered nurse. Examples of activities may include assisting the patient with hygiene/bathing and intake/nutrition through set-up of supplies/meal trays, assistance with ambulation for elimination through ambulation assistance to the restroom, ambulation/exercise), and basic safety procedures.
- Performs basic activities for which competence is demonstrated through the Patient Safety Companion (PSC) skills checklist.
Education:
- High School graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) required or relevant experience
Experience:
- less than 1 year previous healthcare experience or a nursing student currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program. required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact courteously and tactfully with patients, parents/families and members of the health care team.
- Basic assessment and analytical skills in order to perform simple patient observations.
- Functional sight, hearing and speech. Ability to sit and stay alert for prolonged periods of time. Ability to stand &/or walk up to 50% of time.
- Knowledge of computer and keyboard.

- Provides care appropriate to patient population and as described in applicable policies and procedures.
