Key Responsibilities:
- Blueprint Interpretation & Measurement:
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine dimensions, cuts, and assembly procedures.
- Measure and mark dimensions of parts on paper or wood stock to ensure accuracy and quality before cutting.
- Woodworking & Machinery Operation:
- Set up and operate woodworking machinery, including power saws, jointers, mortisers, tenoners, molders, and shapers, to cut, mold, and shape wood or wood substitutes.
- Cut and trim timber, parts of joints, and other materials to precise sizes and shapes using hand tools and machinery.
- Assembly & Construction:
- Assemble components and attach parts using glue, dowels, nails, screws, or clamps to form completed units.
- Reinforce joints and ensure parts fit snugly together for a high-quality finished product.
- Install hardware such as hinges, handles, and drawer pulls using hand tools.
- Finishing & Detailing:
- Sand, scrape, and trim surfaces or joints to prepare woodwork for finishing.
- Apply protective or decorative finishes (e.g., stain, varnish, paint) to completed articles.
- Perform final touch-ups with sandpaper or steel wool for a smooth finish.
- Quality Control:
- Verify dimensions, quality, and fit of parts to ensure adherence to specifications.
- Inspect workpieces for accuracy, defects, and overall quality throughout the production process.
- Make necessary adjustments to ensure precise fit and finish of parts.
- Material Estimation & Planning:
- Estimate material requirements for production and order necessary supplies.
- Match materials for color, grain, and texture to ensure consistency and quality across finished products.
- Repair & Alteration:
- Repair or alter wooden furniture, cabinetry, fixtures, and other wooden pieces as needed.
- Customer Specifications & Design:
- Confer with customers or designers to determine project specifications and requirements.
- Design furniture and other wood products using computer-aided drawing programs as needed.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Proven experience in woodworking and fabricating wood products, including the use of various woodworking machines.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and work orders.
- Expertise in measuring, marking, and cutting wood to exact specifications.
- Skilled in assembling wood components and installing hardware.
- Ability to work with various finishing techniques, including staining, painting, and lacquering.
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precise work.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to address issues during the fabrication process.
- Ability to lift and maneuver heavy wood pieces and work with physical stamina.
- Strong mathematical skills for accurate measurements and calculations.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) for furniture design and product specifications.
- Knowledge of Masonite, Formica, or vinyl surfacing materials.
- Experience programming machinery for automated production tasks.
Experience:
- Prior woodshop experience
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- The employee frequently is required to walk or stand for long periods of time.
