The Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing the firm鈥檚 tax compliance, planning, and reporting across federal, state, local and international jurisdictions. This role plays a critical part in managing income, sales and use, property, payroll, and other indirect taxes common in the AEC industry. The Tax Manager partners closely with Finance, Payroll, Project Accounting, and external tax advisors to ensure compliance, minimize risk, and support the firm鈥檚 growth across multiple jurisdictions and project types.
This position will report to the Treasurer.
Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Manage and oversee preparation, review, and filing of all US federal, state, and local tax returns, including:
- Federal and state income/franchise tax returns
- Sales and use tax returns (multi鈥憇tate)
- Property and personal property tax filings
- Payroll related tax filings, as applicable
- Ensure timely and accurate tax payments and filings across all jurisdictions.
- Monitor and respond to tax notices, audits, and inquiries from taxing authorities, both for US and overseas offices.
- Lead and direct all tax compliance and reporting matters for the company鈥檚 overseas offices with the assistance of local tax advisors as necessary.
AEC Specific Tax Matters
- Oversee sales and use tax compliance related to construction, engineering, design, and consulting services.
- Provide guidance on tax treatment of project based activities, including nexus considerations, job costing impacts, and indirect tax exposure.
- Support business development and project teams with tax guidance related to contract structures, project locations, and client requirements.
Tax Provision & Financial Reporting
- Prepare and/or review quarterly and annual income tax provisions in accordance with GAAP.
- Coordinate tax related disclosures and support financial statement audits.
- Partner with Accounting and FP&A on tax impacts to forecasts, budgets, and long range planning.
Tax Planning & Strategy
- Identify and implement tax planning opportunities to optimize the firm鈥檚 effective tax rate and cash flow.
- Review and advise on tax issues for new project structures or new tax jurisdictions which the company is considering.
- Stay current on changes in tax laws and regulations affecting the AEC industry and advise leadership on potential impacts.
- Support entity structuring, mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic initiatives from a tax perspective.
Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
- Maintain strong internal controls over tax processes and documentation.
- Improve and standardize tax processes, leveraging ERP systems and tax software where applicable.
- Partner with Payroll, Project Accounting, and IT to ensure accurate tax data flows and reporting.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Manage and develop internal tax staff, if applicable.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external tax advisors and auditors.
- Collaborate cross functionally with Finance, HR, Legal, and Operations to ensure tax considerations are integrated into business decisions.
