The NYPD License Division administers the laws and rules pertaining to the Police Commissioner's power to grant handgun licenses, rifle and shotgun permits, dealer's licenses, gunsmith licenses, small arms range designations, and Special Patrolman designations, The Division accepts, processes, investigates, and grants or denies applications for these licenses and designations within the applicable laws, rules, and Department policies. It is also responsible for cancelling, monitoring and suspending or revoking these licenses and designations, in order to protect and promote
public safety. The Division is additionally responsible for adapting to rapidly changing State and local rules and law following the Supreme Court of the United States recent decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v, Bruen.
The New York City Police Department's License Division administers the laws and rules pertaining to the Police Commissioner's power to grant handgun licenses, rifle and shotgun permits. dealer's licenses, gunsmith licenses, small arms range designations, and Special Patrolman designations. Reporting directly to the Director of the License Division, the agency attorney will:
1) Review and timely respond to administrative appeals regarding the disapproval of firearms licenses and permits, and Special Patrolmen designations.
2) Liaise and assist the NYC Law Department with litigation stemming from the disapproval of License Division administrative appeals.
3) Serve as a legal subject matter expert on licensing issues both internally with the Department and externally with other agencies as directed.
4) Where appropriate, assist with the preparation of documents utilized by the License Division, or distributed to members of the public
