The Design Coordinator acts as the main point of contact among the technical teams within the engineering group. The role holder organises the work of the technical teams and consultants to support the overall planning of the technical activities. The Design Coordinator contributes to the production of a comprehensive detailed design of the major infrastructure contracts on behalf of the client Directorate. The role holder supports the Technical Authority Lead in providing assurance on the design, standards, methods, and procedures of the major infrastructure contracts. Additionally, the design coordinator assists in reviewing designs developed by consultants and other contractor(s) for technical acceptability during tendering stage and post contract award, ensuring compliance with standards and constructability requirements
- Oversee and coordinate the input from all technical design disciplines to ensure delivery is fully integrated and optimal.
- Oversee the planning, programming, controlling and assuring of the design content.
- Collaborate with the package leads to ensure effective communication and decision-making are applied within the technical team. Therefore, enable successful procurement of the major infrastructure contracts, while also considering the design and requirements of other core contracts throughout the process.
- Ensure that designs for the main infrastructure contracts are detailed enough and comply with the reference design.
- Coordinate the design process and the collation of design information relating to the key areas of the design.
- Oversee coordination with the team responsible for producing the operational requirements for the major infrastructure.
- Ensure that all operational requirements and outputs are considered in the development of the detailed design by the main infrastructure contractors.
- Coordinate with both the statutory and non-statutory stakeholders to ensure they are considered and carried out in the development of the detailed design.
- Support in the preparation for the various reporting meetings - updating the latest programme dates, capturing reasons for any variances in the programme and identifying the issues preventing key activities.
- Coordinate with the scheme architect and operations advisor to ensure they are considered and carried out in the development of the detailed design.
- Work with the rail safety coordination team to prepare all needed information for the railway regulation stage 2 authorisation application and other safety processes required for the design and contract documentation.
- Assist in the compliance with engineering management strategies and a design execution plan of work in line.
- Track and manage progress, issue progress reports and prepare design and program risk assessment reports. Collect and keep records of design assumptions and design certificates from the consultants.
- Identify any potential risks. Develop the necessary mitigation strategies to minimise these risks to ensure closure of the detailed design process in a timely manner.
- Review construction techniques continually, technological developments and innovations and contract specification requirements to ensure provision of a cost-effective quality product to meet customer requirements.
- Provide support in the monitoring and management of design change in accordance with the project change management procedure.
- Assist in the preparation of design related presentations, reports and schedules as required.
- Assist in establishing strong quality management systems for the design process and work towards fostering a high-performance culture in the contractor's design team by applying quality standards for tests, inspections and design evaluations.
- Perform additional tasks, activities or other duties as may be required or assigned as part of the role.
