We have an opening for a Nuclear Facility Engineer to provide engineering support for new construction, upgrades to facility systems (i.e., building structure, ventilation, fire suppression, compressed gas, piping, and pipe supports), design review, and modifications to conventional office and laboratory facilities. You will apply advanced technical knowledge in project management and system engineering to develop conceptual ideas into workable and cost-effective solutions that maintain facilities supporting treatment and storage of radioactive and hazardous waste. This position supports the Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management Program in the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Prepare and implement complex designs utilizing design criteria, calculations, schematics, sketches, construction documents, procedures, and specifications.
- Utilize advanced technical engineering skills to develop detailed designs, drawings, calculations, bills of materials, presentations, and work planning documentation to support facility improvement projects including evaluating system capacities, planning sequencing of work, and ensuring feasibility.
- Determine functional mechanical requirements for new or modified specialized equipment and support systems and perform advanced mechanical engineering calculations for ventilation, fire protection, cryogenic or gas systems, chillers, or boilers as needed.
- Provide engineering support during construction performed by outside contractors including reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to contractor questions, evaluating change order requests, or resolving field problems.
- Lead complex internal projects with responsibility for the development and compliance with technical criteria, schedules, and deliverables.
- Participate in design reviews to obtain approvals of project scope and designs.
- Maintain facility configuration management program by submitting/reviewing change requests.
- Provide technical input to others on complex design requirements and identify and evaluate potential system impacts for projects affecting facility systems while complying with LLNL procedures, work control system processes, and DOE requirements.
