We have an opening for a Health Physicist in the Environment, Safety and Health. You will provide health physics (HP) support to LLNL programs to ensure effective implementation of the Radiation Protection Program, including field engagement, hazard evaluation, control verification, and technical documentation support. This position is within the Environment Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.
You Will
- Provide complex HP support to assigned programs, including establishing, maintaining, and evaluating the adequacy of personnel dosimetry, bioassay, and whole-body counting programs.
- Partner with program personnel to understand radiological work, assess hazards, and verify that controls are appropriate, documented, communicated, and effective, including through routine field visits and facility inspections.
- Review, develop, and update radiological safety and work planning documentation, including Facility Safety Plans, Work Control Documents, Radiological Work Permits, Safety Analysis Reports, Engineering Designs, and ES&H submittals, in collaboration with program management and support organizations.
- Develop and deliver HP briefings and training; mentor less experienced staff; provide feedback to management on HP program performance and improvement opportunities.
- Respond to radiological incidents and emergencies; support investigations and corrective actions; provide HP support during internal and external assessments, inspections, and verifications.
- Provide day-to-day technical oversight to health and safety technicians performing HP sampling and assigned tasks; support development and execution of the HP Discipline Action Plan for assigned areas.

- Direct technical or operational tasks and projects and/or support research efforts. Conduct highly advanced studies through the application of best-practice technical, applied science, and/or business principles, theories, and concepts.
- Provide solutions to highly complex issues/problems where a high degree of ambiguity exists around techniques and approaches. Solutions require in-depth analysis of multiple tangible and intangible factors and may require application of complex computational analyses and/or use of advanced computer applications.
- May serve as the organization spokesperson on specialized projects or programs. May act as the prime consultant on large projects that affect the organization's long-term goals and objectives. Brief senior management on overall impact and approach these projects or programs.
