We have an opening for a Systems Engineer to drive the adoption of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), digital requirements management, and related digital engineering practices across the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program within the Deterrence Capabilities Group. You will serve as a cross-functional product expert and trusted advisor, guiding engineers to adopt and maximize the value of digital engineering tools and processes, including discrete requirements management and model-based systems engineering. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, you will advance MBSE and other digital engineering practices, assist in shaping related business processes, deliver training, and act as a liaison between solution providers and end users to facilitate effective tool adoption and integration, advocate for digital engineering adoption and grow communities of practice. This position is in the Deterrence Capabilities Group (DCG) in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), supporting the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program.
This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home up to one day per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Serve as a key liaison between weapon systems engineers and digital solution providers, facilitating the adoption and integration of Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE)-wide digital engineering solutions to establish a unified digital thread.
- Support Strategic Deterrence (SD) in developing MBSE infrastructure and capabilities, including defining policies, improving processes, and delivering training in advanced digital engineering approaches.
- Mentor and train staff in requirements management and MBSE tools, techniques, and best practices, collaborating with DCG, System Engineering and Integration (SE&I), WTE, and SD Applications Program personnel.
- Contribute in the development of component and subsystem technical requirements, including but not limited to performance requirements identification, interface management, and traceability to verification activities.
- Collaborate with external agencies and partners on joint digital engineering initiatives and integration efforts.
- Advocate for the systems engineering discipline and the adoption of modern digital engineering tools and practices to advance WTE and SD program objectives.
- Ensure effective and timely communication of program risks and requirements to leadership, Influencing technical decisions through SE&I activities.
- Represent WTE, SD, and DTED at meetings, briefings, and committee activities, and perform special assignments as directed, both within and outside the Laboratory.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level
- Apply advanced knowledge of MBSE, digital requirements management, and systems engineering practices to provide authoritative opinions and recommendations, influencing program and project direction to align with high-level strategic objectives for WTE and SD.
- Lead cross-organizational digital engineering initiatives, coordinating interfaces among weapon systems engineers, SE&I, WTE, SD, and external NSE partners, serving as the primary technical point of contact for selected MBSE and digital engineering efforts.
- Provide overall technical leadership, guidance, and direction to multidisciplinary teams in developing, deploying, and maturing MBSE models, digital threads, and requirements management approaches, including advancing state of the art practices and transitioning them into routine program use while balancing customer and partner priorities to meet program milestones.
- Shape and refine digital engineering business processes, governance, and standards across the WTE Program, advising leadership on strategy, investment priorities, and integration of MBSE and requirements management capabilities into broader program workflows.
- Mentor, advise, and provide guidance to junior and mid-career staff on MBSE methods, digital engineering tools, and systems engineering best practices, fostering communities of practice and promoting a culture of effective digital engineering adoption.
