He aha te tūranga - About the role:
We are looking for friendly, practical, and community-minded people to join our Major Incident Support Team (MIST) in Thames. This is a volunteer, non-clinical role where you will play an important part in supporting ambulance crews and helping communities during a range of situations.
As a MIST member, you could be assisting ambulance crews with patient lifting, helping set up support operations at events such as music festivals, or providing logistical support during incidents ranging from local emergencies to large-scale national disasters. Whether it’s a planned event or an unexpected crisis, you will be part of the essential support team working behind the scenes to help ambulance operations run smoothly and to make a meaningful difference in your community.
If you enjoy being part of a team, supporting others, and contributing to your community, this could be a rewarding opportunity to get involved.
Responsibilities – As a MIST member your key tasks may include, but are not limited to:
There are 4 areas where you can be involved (although you may not be needed at each event). These include Administration, Communications, Welfare, and Logistics.
Training – To set you up for success, all new MIST members complete an initial foundation training programme. This includes a two-day induction to Hato Hone St John, two days of Operational Risk Management training, and two days of driving training. Together, these courses provide the knowledge and practical skills needed to operate vehicles and equipment safely and confidently in emergency environments.
Following the foundation training, members will also complete a two-day 4WD training course organised by Hato Hone St John. Throughout the year, we also run training days to support ongoing learning and operational readiness, and members are expected to take part in these sessions.
Please note you must live within 20-minute drive of Thames Station (1102 Queen Street, Thames 3578).
