Job Purpose
The Specialist Nurse β Radiation Oncology provides expert nursing care to patients undergoing radiation therapy. This role focuses on patient assessment, treatment coordination, side effect management, and patient education to support individuals throughout their cancer treatment journey. The nurse collaborates with oncologists, radiation therapists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive, compassionate, and safe care that aligns with best practices in oncology nursing.
Core Responsibilities
Patient Assessment and Monitoring
- Conduct initial and ongoing assessments of patients receiving radiation therapy, documenting medical history, symptoms, and treatment responses.
- Monitor patients for treatment-related side effects and provide timely interventions.
- Communicate findings and updates to the radiation oncology team for coordinated care.
Treatment Coordination and Support
- Collaborate with oncologists, radiation therapists, and other specialists to develop individualized care plans.
- Assist in preparing patients for radiation therapy sessions, ensuring their comfort and understanding of the procedures.
- Manage patient schedules and coordinate follow-up appointments and consultations as needed.
Patient Education and Advocacy
- Educate patients and families on the radiation treatment process, potential side effects, and post-treatment care.
- Provide resources and counselling to help patients manage physical and emotional challenges during therapy.
- Advocate for patient needs and act as a liaison between patients and the oncology care team.
Clinical Practice and Safety
- Follow protocols for patient safety and radiation protection, maintaining strict compliance with all regulatory guidelines.
- Implement infection control measures and maintain a sterile environment as required.
- Ensure the correct handling and disposal of medical equipment and radioactive materials.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate patient records, including assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes.
- Report any changes in patient condition or adverse events to the appropriate medical personnel.
- Participate in the development and revision of clinical protocols and procedures.
Professional Development and Training
- Engage in continuing education and training related to oncology and radiation therapy.
- Mentor and train junior nursing staff and support their integration into the oncology care team.
- Participate in research initiatives and stay informed about advancements in radiation oncology nursing practices.
