As a Senior Process (Control & Instrumentation) Engineer, you will join Manchester/Derby/ Warrington team to support our activities within the Nuclear sector.
This role focuses on developing control philosophies, control narratives, and Safety & Functional Requirements Specifications (SFRS) including HMI specifications that support the safety case, security case, and regulatory compliance across complex engineered systems.
The position requires strong process engineering capability, understanding of safety-critical design principles, and experience working in highly regulated environments where requirements evolve and designs change frequently.

Key Responsibilities:
- Process Control & System Design
- Develop and maintain Control Philosophies, Control Narratives, and Functional Specifications for safety-critical systems
- Define control strategies, interlocks, alarms, and operating logic to meet functional, performance, and safety requirements
- Ensure control behaviour aligns with safety engineering principles including:
- Defence-in-depth
- Redundancy and diversity
- Failure tolerance and graceful degradation
- Support design, testing, validation, and commissioning strategies for HMI, automation, and control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA, or safety platforms)
- Safety Case & Security Case Support
- Produce or contribute to Safety and Functional Requirements Specifications (SFRS)
- Provide engineering evidence supporting safety case and security case justification
- Participate in hazard identification and risk assessment activities, including:
- HAZOP
- FMEA
- Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- SIL / LOPA studies
- Safety audits
- Collaborate with safety, cybersecurity, and compliance teams to meet regulatory requirements
- Process Modelling, Analysis & Improvement
- Analyse process behaviour, system dynamics, and operational performance
- Support modelling, simulation, and engineering analysis to inform design decisions
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reliability, stability, and lifecycle performance while maintaining safety integrity
- Instrumentation & Measurement Strategy
- Develop instrumentation and sensor strategies, including placement, accuracy, redundancy, diagnostics, and maintainability
- Specify sensors, transmitters, and critical measurements aligned with functional safety requirements
- Collaborate with plant engineers and control system teams to ensure effective integration into control loops
- Stakeholder Engagement & Change Management
- Work effectively in programmes with evolving requirements, ambiguity, and frequent design changes
- Engage with multidisciplinary stakeholders including:
- Operations teams
- Safety and assurance teams
- Cybersecurity specialists
- Systems engineers
- Control and instrumentation engineers
- External regulators or assessors
- Facilitate technical workshops, design reviews, and engineering decision forums
- Communicate complex engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Documentation & Compliance
- Produce clear, high-quality engineering documentation that is traceable and compliant with industry standards
- Review and approve technical deliverables from internal teams and suppliers
- Ensure alignment with relevant regulations and industry standards, such as:
- IEC 61508
- IEC 61511
- ISO 55000
- Sector-specific safety regulations
