Mammography Technologistsoperatea mammography unit to produce images of the breasts for diagnostic purposes under the direction of a physician.They explain the procedure to patients, position and immobilize the patient’s breast in the unit, andobservethe scanning process. This involvesmonitoringthe video display of the area being scanned and adjusting the density or contrast to improve picture quality. Mammography Technologists then review and evaluate the film or image recording plate todetermineif the images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. Throughout thiswhole process, Mammography Technologists use radiation safety measures and protection devices tocomply withgovernment regulations and to ensure the safety of patients and caregivers.
A caregiver in this positionworks7:00am—3:30pmor 8:00am—4:30pm.No holiday,eveningsor weekends.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Review mammography requisition and computer exam forms todeterminethe type of examrequired.
Accurately position patients,determinethe exposure factors, andoperatemammography equipment according to established procedures to obtain a high-quality image.
Review processed images todeterminequality and the need foradditionalimages.
Educate patientsregardingprocedures, equipment, and the exam to ensure understanding and cooperation.
Ensure patients' safety and comfort during and after the exam.
Acquire, archive,transmit, and print images via CAD and PACS.
Complete after-hourstransmission of images andappropriate paperwork.
Report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.
Process billing via RIS.
Assistwith all policies and procedures required by local, state, and federal law, and with compliance or credentialing bodies (ACR, MQSA, Medicare, Medicaid, FDA, etc.)
Assistwith instrument calibration and records to ensure compliance with quality assurance requirements.
Perform equipment checks toassureproper function of and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
Ensure exam rooms are adequately supplied with linen and related medical supplies.
Provide teaching and mentoring to new hires and students.
Strive to learn new technical information and skills through attendance of periodic in-service programs and participation in professional affiliation sessions.
Rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites, and/or locations.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate of anAmerican Medical Association (AMA) approved schoolof Radiologic Technology
Registered Technologist credentialed by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. R.T.(R) (ARRT), in good standing
Certification in Mammography: R.T.(R) (M) (ARRT)
Current state licensure (RL)requiredprior to employment
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross
Successful completion of40 hoursof mammography training
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
One year of experience as a General Radiologic Technologist
