THE ROLE
TheRefrigeration Equipment Operator – First Classis responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining refrigeration systems that provide chilled water for the facility’s air conditioning systems. Under general supervision and on an assigned shift, this role ensures the safe and efficient operation of refrigeration equipment and related building systems.
This position also monitors the facility management system (METASYS), responds to system alarms, and coordinates with internal teams and contractors to resolve operational issues. As part of the Engineering Services organization, this role supports the reliable operation of critical building infrastructure that enables successful events and facility operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Refrigeration System Operations
Operate, adjust, troubleshoot, and repair refrigeration equipment and associated systems.
Balance, adjust, and set controls including expansion valves, hydrostatic regulators, electric regulators, and other system controls tomaintainrequired temperature levels.
Operateandmaintainrefrigerationcompressor rooms including condensing systems, chilled water pumping systems, and circulatory apparatus.
HVAC & Building Systems
Operateandmaintainair mixing and conditioning units.
Schedule building lighting and air-handling systems basedon facilityoperational needs.
Monitorcontrolair systemslocatedthroughout the facility.
Equipment Maintenance
Perform operational checks and equipment inspections to ensure proper performance.
Inspect and lubricate bearings andhousings.
Replace worn belts and service motors, fans, compressors, pumps, and related mechanical equipment.
Assistwith major repairs and overhauls of refrigeration and air conditioning units.
Mechanical & Electrical Support
Inspect, adjust, and perform minor and emergency repairs to pumps, steam lines, valves, traps, and regulating devices.
Maintainwater and drainage systems.
Troubleshoot electrical lighting and control circuits, breakers, fans, switches, motors/starters, and motor generator sets.
Service HVAC coils and actuators.
Facility Monitoring & Safety Systems
Monitorthe facility management system (METASYS) and respond to alarm-generating conditions.
Operatethe Fire Alarm system from the Fire Alarm workstation or Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP).
Disable fire alarm points when necessary for maintenance and inspections while coordinating with contractors and facility staff.
Coordinate with Security and other teams toidentifyand resolve alarm conditions.
Operational Support
Respond to service calls and operational complaints.
Record operating information in equipment logs.
Patrolfacilitymechanical areas andoperateforklifts whenrequired.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of departmental and organizational goals.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training in mechanical or refrigeration systems preferred.
Five (5) or more years of experienceoperating, repairing, andmaintainingrefrigeration and air conditioning equipment and related systems.
Experience working with compressors, chilled water systems, pumps, and mechanical equipment.
Special Requirements, Licenses & Certifications
First Class Refrigeration Equipment Operator’s License(City of Detroit or Dearborn preferred).
Steam Operator’s License preferred.
CFC Certification and EPA Refrigerant HandlingCertificationstronglypreferred.
