The Division of Sidewalk & Inspection Management (SIM) is responsible for maintaining 12,750 miles of sidewalk and more than 185,000 corners throughout the city. The Pedestrian Ramp Program (PRP), a unit within SIM, is committed to providing pedestrian (curb) ramps citywide that meet applicable accessibility laws and guidelines. Pedestrian ramps are a critical component in providing safe and accessible means of travel throughout New York City. Pedestrian ramps provide access on and off our streets and sidewalks and are an essential tool for all pedestrians, especially aging New Yorkers and people with disabilities.
PRP is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented professional to join a fast-paced and collaborative architectural team. This team is responsible for the evaluation of existing pedestrian ramp conditions; design review of private developer construction projects; tracking of pedestrian ramps; ADA compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); and coordination with other entities working in DOT鈥檚 right-of-way.
The selected candidate will assist with inter-agency planning efforts. They will also work closely with other DOT divisions and other City agencies such as New York City Department of Buildings, Department of Environmental Protection, and Department of Parks and Recreation to ensure the design of high-quality pedestrian ramps throughout the city.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing and commenting on pedestrian ramp accessibility issues and on Builders Pavement Plan drawings for conformance with the latest accessibility and DOT standards
- Coordinating with internal DOT units, external agencies, contractors, consultants, vendors, and members of the public to ensure successful implementation of accessibility requirements and other DOT requirements.
- Identifying and resolving design issues, answering accessibility-related questions and assessing technical infeasibilities
- Assisting in executing PRPs goals by reinforcing our relationships with outside agencies
- Communicating and administering DOT technical standards to relevant outside agencies
Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, design and technical review of sketches, plans, and drawings for design and construction, confirmation of compliance with appropriate standards, codes, laws, rules and/or regulations to maintain the highest standards will be required.
The selected candidate may also support intra- and interagency efforts to review and update codes, rules and guidelines related to pedestrian access in the Public Right of Way.
