Here’s what you’ll do:
Your day-to-day will include but not be limited to the following tasks and responsibilities:
Head of Construction
The Head of Construction is a senior leadership position responsible for the safe, efficient, and successful delivery of the Infrastructure Department’s construction portfolio. This role requires a highly experienced construction management professional capable of operating at all organisational levels and leading complex construction activities within a live aviation environment.
The post holder will provide strategic oversight across all construction activities, ensuring delivery to the highest standards of safety, quality, schedule performance, and cost control. They will develop and implement a comprehensive construction strategy that enables standardisation, integration, and excellence across the full programme lifecycle.
Strategic Leadership
Develop and implement an overarching construction strategy aligned to the Infrastructure Department’s objectives.
Establish and maintain best-practice frameworks, policies, processes, procedures, and systems to ensure a consistent and standardised approach to construction delivery.
Champion adherence to the agreed construction strategy and delivery methodology across all programmes.
Portfolio Oversight
Provide executive oversight of multiple construction categories including terminals and commercial buildings, piers, airfields, aprons, and associated infrastructure.
Ensure effective management of construction activities from planning through to completion and handover.
Maintain responsibility for construction financial performance, including tracking, change control, purchase orders, and payment oversight.
Safety, Compliance & Governance
Ensure the safe delivery of all construction works in compliance with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.
Hold accountability for the quality and robustness of on-site Risk Assessments and Method Statements.
Monitor contractor compliance with planning, statutory, and environmental regulations.
Remain current with legislative changes and industry best practices, ensuring full programme compliance.
Programme Delivery & Performance
Ensure all programmes undergo comprehensive constructability reviews and actively contribute to those reviews.
Provide guidance to Programme Directors and Programme Controls teams to ensure projects are deliverable and meet agreed performance metrics.
Drive consistent standards and methodologies across all programmes, embedding continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
Develop and implement a contractor performance management framework in collaboration with the Head of Contracts and Commercial, focusing on quality, cost, and delivery performance.
Support delivery teams in managing the construction supply chain from procurement through to final handover.
Procurement & Commercial Oversight
Contribute to the procurement of construction works, ensuring tenderers are suitably qualified and proposals include accurate duration and cost data.
Review and cross-check contract documentation relating to on-site matters and provide guidance in resolving discrepancies in collaboration with Programme Directors.
Team Leadership
Lead and manage the construction team, setting clear objectives and performance targets.
Drive high performance with a focus on safety, financial control, quality, and service excellence.
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
