The Challenge: Engineering for Scale
At our scale, "testing" isn't about manual checks or writing scripts; it鈥檚 a massive distributed systems problem. The Safer Changes team within Developer Enablement is responsible for building the internal platforms that allow 1,000+ engineers to ship code with maximum confidence and zero friction.
Note: This is a Backend Engineering role, not a QA or SDET position. You won't be writing test cases for features. You will be architecting the Java-based infrastructure, intelligence layers, and orchestration engines that power the entire Wise engineering organisation.
What will you be working on?
You will be solving problems at scale, with large engineering-wide organisational impact. When you create platforms, services and opinionated standards/best practices, you help accelerate Wise Engineers to solving problems for our customers even faster. Specific challenges include:
Distributed Test Orchestration: Architecting a high-throughput framework that automates the execution, analysis, and collation of results across thousands of concurrent jobs. You'll build the systems so that product engineers never have to think about how their code is validated鈥攊t just happens.
Predictive Impact Intelligence: Building the logic and services that understand our microservice graph. Your code will determine exactly which business flows are impacted by a specific change, automatically designing test scenarios and provisioning purpose-built ephemeral environments on the fly.
Production-Grade Isolation: Developing the tooling and infrastructure that allows unmerged, "dirty" code to be tested in pre-production environments safely, ensuring engineers can experiment without impacting the stability of the testing platform or other developers.
How we work
We believe in automation as a product. We use Java and Spring Boot to build robust, scalable internal services. We operate with a "Platform-as-a-Product" mindset鈥攐ur customers are our fellow engineers, and our bar for reliability, security, and performance is incredibly high.
What do you need?
Advanced Java Engineering: You are a seasoned backend engineer with deep expertise in Java and the Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot).
Systems Thinking: You enjoy thinking about problems at scale鈥攈ow services interact, how data flows through a mesh, and how to build fault-tolerant systems.
Cloud Infrastructure: Experience with AWS or GCP, and a solid understanding of how cloud resources (Kubernetes, Docker) are provisioned and managed.
A "Product" Mindset for Tools: You are passionate about developer experience. You want to build the tools you wish you had earlier in your career.
Nice to Have
Experience with CI/CD Orchestration (e.g., GitHub Actions, Spinnaker).
Familiarity with SRE principles, Chaos Engineering, or observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
Knowledge of Service Mesh (Istio/Envoy) and complex cloud networking.
A background in building internal developer platforms or high-leverage infrastructure.
You get back:
True Autonomy: The freedom to define the technical vision for how Wise handles change safety.
High Visibility: Your work is used by every engineer in the company, every single day.
Impact: Help us in our Mission towards Money Without Borders by ensuring our systems are the most reliable in the industry.
Growth: A clear engineering career map that rewards technical depth and leadership.
